The Difference Between a Blog Writer, Article Writer and an SEO Writer

March 31, 2007 5:26 pm

There’s a difference between an article writer, an SEO writer and also a blog writer. Some writers have the capability of alternating their styles to suit the requirements of the clients. Ideally, you should use different writers for your articles, SEO content and blog but this is not the rule of thumb and I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of ever hiring a content writer who can write for all of the above.

For a start, I’ll explain a little about what is required from the writer for each of them

Article writers are required to write for a wide range of people who are interested in the topic that they are supposed to write on. Article writers usually write for newspaper columns or magazines. Hence, the article writer needs to, usually, find topics and delve into it more deeply than other types of writers.

Essentially, SEO writers are supposed to write for the search engines. But because the search algorithm for many major search engines have changed over time, an SEO writer needs to write for the search engines the readers. Search engines like google.com forces SEO writers to write proper and informative articles instead of stringing senseless words and keywords together to make content that doesn’t make sense at all to the readers, much less enticing.

Blog writers is a new bunch of writers who are usually hired to write content for blogs. Because these writers are usually hired to write for a particular company or industry, they have to consistently search for information relating to the business of the website and keep their eyes and ears open for interesting news. Blog writers are usually people who are either hired to write from the office of the client or online freelance writers who deliver articles on a daily basis.

As you can see, what is required from each type of writer is different, hence, it can be quite difficult to find and hire a freelance writer who can fit all the bills above…to get personal with the readers, to keep themselves in the loop with search engines and also to understand the nature of your business and company.

But like I said, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of ever finding and hiring a freelance writer who can do all. My advice would be for you to give the freelance writer a chance to write a few articles for you for your website and blog; then you can gauge whether the writer is suitable or not. Thread cautiously especially if you want to hire a writer online. Do as much homework as you can on the freelance writer before you hire the writer.

Fact Checkers - Literary Firewalls

10:17 am

As a writer, your work is unique, one-of a kind and sacrosanct. A fact checker is your guard against the outside influences which only seek to confuse and detract. There are three stages by which you can prevent any literary virus, infiltration by spam or bogus sources and lies or worms eating away at the credibility of your work.

The first is good primary research. Most poor reporters think primary research begins with Wikipedia. Although a good springboard for verification, they have a bad reputation for being, well, wrong. Ask Sinbad. A quick call to his publicist would have corrected the rumors of his death. It is not Encyclopedia Britannica. Online searches that are limited to Google are also a bad move. A primary researcher will go directly to the data, the study, the author, the authority to make sure that yes, indeed, there is such as thing as National Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (January 28).

The second is fact checking. This entails taking your piece and matching it against the sources or data that was discovered during the research phase. Contrary to popular belief, this process does not gut a story. You do not lose the message or the beautiful prose. You gain credibility; a solid foundation that lends legitimacy to your work. So a person comes away from reading your work saying: I can’t believe it’s all true-but it is!

The third is proofing. Now, this may seem superfluous-why do this after all that’s already been done? Some writer’s may think: “It’s already been tampered with, proofing is just like doing double duty.” But through making changes or editing the work, it is possible that a train of thought may have gone awry. A new fact or change may beg more questions. The reader may invariably ask for more information, resources and if frustrated will feel the effort of reading your piece was wasted. Additions may be needed. Proofing is the bow on the Christmas present-it ties up the work and makes it a complete package.

Marketing Your Web Writing - Self-Promotion Is Not Bragging

5:28 am

To become a highly paid Web writer, you need to spend some energy on promotion. Unfortunately, this is difficult for some writers.

Many Web writers are self-conscious and shy. There are a million and one reasons for this, but to write successfully - that is, to get paid what you’re worth - you need to become comfortable at promoting your Web writing. If no one knows what you do, you’ll always be scrabbling for the next paycheck, when you could be turning away Web writing clients because you’re booked solid.

Here’s a snippet (quoted with permission) from an email message I received this week:

“I’ve tried the out-sourcing sites, but it’s ridiculous - 100 articles for $250. Come on! I’m getting discouraged. I don’t think I’m cut out to be a writer at all… I know you said I need a Web site, but aside from the effort of learning how to do that, and the time it takes, I don’t like bragging. It’s just not me.”

I’m not against $2 articles - some writers are happy to write for $2, and why not? Web writing is a global occupation, and $2 goes a lot further in India than it does in Europe, the US or Australia. I also know a lot of writers writing for these amounts are college students, earning some extra money.

This is fine - but these people are not professional writers. There’s a lot more to professional writing than writing, so to speak.

No one, least of all me, is suggesting that you churn out $2 articles. However, to get paid reasonably well, you do need to put effort into self-promotion.

Self-Promotion Is Not Bragging, It’s Marketing, And It Works

All businesses market themselves. Whether it’s a local store hiring a sign-writer to plaster the week’s specials across a window, or a giant fast-food operation buying blocks of TV advertising time and spending millions in the process, it’s promotion, which is a form of marketing. It’s not bragging. It’s business.

I know that many writers suffer under the impression that they shouldn’t need to market their writing. You’re an excellent writer - so why should you hustle? It’s demeaning.

Well, it’s not demeaning. When you know how to do it, it’s a lot of fun. I used to be a writer with a “self-promotion is bragging” attitude. So I took a marketing course at my local college. It was the best time and money I ever spent. Of course you don’t have to go back to school to learn marketing, you can visit your local library and take out books on marketing.

It’s really up to you. There’s a lot of money to be made in writing for the Web, and many writers have already made the switch because Web writing has huge benefits. But yes, you do need a Web site, and you do need to do some self-promotion.

Try it - you have nothing to lose, and much to gain. Once you do, I promise you that you’ll have a lot of fun. I went from a person who hates all forms of self-promotion to someone who loves it, and you can too. Put some time into self-promotion, and your Web writing income will rise - it really is that simple, and that easy.

What I Respect Most About Wayne Dyer - Author & Book Promoter

March 30, 2007 7:22 pm

Wayne Dyer has written a lot of nifty self-help books, and he has also starred in some very enjoyable public TV shows.

So, he has earned every bit of his success, and he has made, and continues to make great contributions to people’s lives.

But it isn’t his writing or his ideas or his performances that impress me as much as one thing he did when he was just breaking into publishing.

He tells the story about how he loaded his beat up station wagon with books and toured the countryside speaking at every bookstore and on every radio station that would have him. Literally, he put his own books onto the shelves at many of the nation’s bookstores.

Why did he go to this extreme?

Wouldn’t publishers have done the same thing for him, faster, with a lot less bother to him?

No.

He knew this. He had written what he thought was a fine book, one that would sell, but only if people: (1) Knew it existed; and (2) Could find it in bookstores.

So, he addressed those two challenges and PERSONALLY CREATED HIS FIRST BEST-SELLER, “Pulling Your Own Strings.”

When I was promoting my early books I got myself onto as many radio and TV stations as I could. I personally paid for a publicist, and I also did a lot of my own publicity, first hand.

I remember being on vacation in Hawaii, stuck in my hotel room, doing one “phoner”– telephone interview– after another back to the mainland. While the beach beckoned, I was stuck speaking to audiences in snow-socked Chicago and Detroit.

But it helped to put me and my books on the map.

If you’re serious about wanting to be an author I encourage you to read Dyer’s description of what he did to become known. Then, ask yourself: “What am I willing to do; what sacrifices will I make?”

Writing Press Releases

3:36 pm

Do you have an assembly, product or codex and need publicity? Writing press releases takes some talent. Contrary to writing articles, press releases are sometimes difficult since you have a different structure to follow. However, the structure is not as different as many people believe.

The ethical Press Release could develop into FREE exposure in the press headquarters and aired on television. Electronic journalism is continuously searching for great stories and/or companies to profile. This makes writing press releases important to any company.

However, each day thousands of written press releases are sent out. This presents a problem because most companies must weed through the ferocious competition. Therefore, your press release must appeal to your reader, by standing out.

To achieve this task sometimes you just have to write your press release the traditional way, only add some modern tactics. Since the future is gearing up for artificial intelligence you want to focus on this also when writing press releases.

In addition, you want to focus on SEO strategies, such as optimization when writing your press release.

To make your press release stand out you want to keep the points clear and vindicate your writing by delivering easy readable material. Focus on attention-grabbers also.

When you focus on your advertising or marketing campaign make sure that you keep SEO in mind. Use strategies so that your release will trigger the major search engines algorithms. By doing this your writing press releases will prove fruitful since you just might find it posted on thousands of Blog, forums, directories and major search engines online.
