It is found that this person is well-educated and has the required teaching experience. He has good communicative and listening skills, effectively uses technology in the classroom and has good relations with students. Moreover, he is involved in community activities and activities on campus, sharing his ideas with others. However, sometimes he may not keep the scheduled office time that he is supposed to.
In addition, Roy Sanders has encountered with some difficulties. His newly hired Business & Marketing teacher prefers to lock the classroom door at the start of the class, so any student who is late, cannot attend his lecture. The major reason is that this teacher is sure that his students should be well-organized and should learn to manage their time.
Moreover, Roy Sanders, as the Department Chair of Nassau Community College, shared the three main reasons for which he would dismiss a Business & Marketing teacher. He would dismiss the teacher who is not connecting at all with his students, and students often complain about this teacher. Secondly, he would dismiss the teacher who is alienated his fellow teacher colleagues, because Roy Sanders is sure that teaching is a team work. Thirdly, he would dismiss the teacher who has inappropriate relations with his students.
Besides, Roy Sanders suggests that the major purpose of Business & Marketing programs at the secondary and postsecondary levels is to qualify students for sound innovative teaching in the classroom and creative leadership among peers. Roy Sanders is sure that it is necessary to find the appropriate approaches to improve Business & Marketing programs at the secondary and postsecondary levels. He argues that is very important to bring in the best teachers with different backgrounds and experiences who will be able to share their skills and knowledge with others. Additionally, Roy Sanders suggests that it is necessary to get rid of those programs that are not beneficial to students because they do not lead to successful employment. For example, he sets forward an opinion to get rid of the Associate Degree program in Marketing because students have practically no chance to find jobs.
In the interview, Roy Sanders represents the type of induction program that his college provides for new Business & Marketing teachers. New Business and Marketing teachers are provided with a one-to-one mentor for the first year of teaching who help the beginning teachers to attain high and rigorous teaching standards.
In case, Roy Sanders has two applicants for a teaching position in the Business & Marketing department, he would use the following factors to select any one of them: higher degree, technology fluency, the higher score in the grid and SCANS assessments (Haltinner, 2008, p.127).
Moreover, in the interview, Roy Sanders advices Business & Marketing teachers to keep up with the latest technology and incorporate it into the classroom and use different teaching tools and methods. Roy Sanders states that Business & Marketing teachers must get involved in activities at the school and community, and must have such traits as passion, leadership, classroom management, and content knowledge. He suggests that the following reforms could help to improve Business & Marketing programs in NassauCommunity College: it is necessary to make certain changes to program offerings based on the needs of the community and local employers, learn more about the types of jobs available for graduates, and the requirements necessary for graduates to obtain these jobs.
