Essay on Entering Graduate School

It is known that education plays an important role in the life of any individual. Good education gives an opportunity to succeed in life and to make a good career. My choice is to enter the veterinary school in order to become a veterinarian. I know that a profession of a veterinary doctor is an important one because it requires the appropriate skills and knowledge.  The major goal of veterinarians is to diagnose and provide effective treatment of sick or injured animals. In addition, veterinarians provide animals with preventive health care to avoid serious diseases. In some cases, they perform surgeries on animals. I think that the work of veterinarians is honorable because these people devote their lives to animals, the weakest creatures who need protection and care of human beings. Veterinarians treat sick pets and livestock, zoo animals and wildlife animals. Veterinarians not only care for animals, they also protect humans against some dangerous diseases carried by animals.

I know that this profession requires such personal characteristics as the ability to work under severe conditions, self-confidence, tolerance and industriousness. It is not a secret that veterinarians usually treat animals in special veterinary hospitals or clinics. As a rule, these facilities are very noisy. In addition, those veterinarians, who are engaged in large animal practice, have to work out of well-equipped veterinary hospitals or clinics, and they have to drive considerable distances to farms and ranches where animals are held. Besides the above mentioned facts, veterinarians have to work outdoors in any weather. But what is more important is that they can be exposed to different diseases and infections, and, of course, they may be scratched, kicked or bitten. I know that most veterinarians work more than 50 hours a week and those who are in private practice work days and nights. It means that the profession of a veterinary doctor is for strong people who do not afraid to work hard and who have an abundance of love for animals.

As for me, I love animals and I am ready to devote my life to veterinary science. I was born and raised in Korea. When I was 17 years old, our family moved to the United States. When I just got to the USA, I couldn’t speak English and I had great problems with communication. However, I did my best to learn English and to start a new life. I have made up my mind to become a veterinarian because I love animals and have a great desire to help them. One episode in my life had enormous impact on my desire to become a veterinarian.  One day, my friend had to leave the city, and she asked me to take care of her dog. I spent three summer months with her dog and I had a great pleasure to take care of that dog. However, I found out that my friend’s dog had Cushing’s syndrome. Because of the hormone imbalance, the dog lost muscle and fat shifted to the stomach. The dog looked pot-bellied. I had to think deeply about animals. I do not want animals to suffer from pain. Due to the development of new technologies, there are a number of effective treatment methods which can be used in veterinary. I have a great desire to learn more and more in order to help any sick animal that I will meet in my future veterinary practice. Today I have already made up my mind to become a veterinarian, and I am not going to give up this idea. I am interested in biology, chemistry and medicine. I prefer to read different journals in veterinary science and to analyze the activities of the leading veterinarians in the United States and in other countries of the world. In addition, I have already got some experience in my veterinary practice. I worked in zoo during winter 2011,  and I was a volunteer at Yelp, A.P.W.S. Adoption, and East Animal Shelter. I have got a chance to work as veterinary assistant in one of the veterinary clinics. Today I am successfully working at the veterinary clinics and help the veterinary professionals to treat animals, and to perform different operations. I assist with monitoring and carding of patients. I can help in feeding and exercising animals.
