It is known that today technology plays a significant role in any sphere of human activity, including education. Teachers should demonstrate not only the appropriate skills and abilities, but also their understanding of technology operations and options (Johnson et al., 2005). As a rule, teachers have the major goal Ēď to plan and design effective learning environment that will be supported by technology. I know that the use of technology in education can help to improve not only the teaching process, but also the students’ outcomes. According to the recent survey, ďabout 56% of schools and libraries expect to implement or expand digital textbook use in the next few yearsĒĚ, and 45% of educational institutions expect to implement or expand the use of wireless devises for digital leaning (Mobile Learning Report Card). In this paper, I will discuss the use of technology in education, paying special attention to the benefits of this technology and to the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers. The technology I will discuss in this assignment is e-books. Using e-books in education is an excellent application of technology which guarantees many benefits to teachers and students.
Description of the technology
E-book is an electronic book which can be successfully used in schools, colleges and universities. The term e-book can be defined as ďa digital file, but not limited to just text, that is displayed on some form of computer or electronic deviceĒĚ (Cavanaugh, 2006, p. 4). According to Terence W. Cavanaugh (2006), one day digital books will replace printed textbooks and materials (p. 4). It is known that e-books have special characteristics that differ from printed books. Using e-books, students can read, write and save their notes, highlight some important portions of text and draw. In addition, it is known that many models of e-books can use computer memory for storage. This fact means that it is possible to put many books into small packages. One more important characteristic is that e-books have a computer interface which gives them an opportunity to have good practice. Using e-books, students have access to interactive dictionaries in multiple languages, reference books, encyclopedia which are of great importance in the process of learning. Moreover, ďit is possible to have the books read aloudĒĚ in the classroom or at home (Cavanaugh, 2006, p. 4). E-books have two main components: software that allows viewing the text and to listen audio, and hardware that allows displaying the text on the screen.
Description of the teaching product
¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† E-books can be used in conjunction with different teaching strategies, including reading comprehension strategies which can be used in groups or individually. These strategies may contain the following techniques: ďconcept mapping, think-share-pair, KL (Know/Learned) diagrams, and one-sentence summariesĒĚ (Cavanaugh, 2006, p. 5). I will divide my teaching product into two sections. The first section will include the essays and my comments. The second section will include different assignments.

 and the teaching product
E-books meet the established standards. It is known that according to the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for teachers, ďteachers should implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learningĒĚ (Johnson, 2005, p. 451).¬† E-books can be used as teaching tools to maximize student learning. It is allowed to use technological and information technologies, including libraries, databases, video, etc. in order to gather new information and improve learning skills.
The benefits of using technology in the teaching profession
Today information is becoming more accessible. This fact means that more and more students have the opportunity to get new knowledge and broaden their outlook. According to Ann E. Barron (2002), the most important skills for today’s students include ďthe ability to use technology to access, analyze, filter and organize multidimensional information sourcesĒĚ (p. 3). The major benefits of using technology in the teaching profession include instructional effectiveness, active learning, promoting of critical thinking skills, individualization, motivation, flexibility for students with special needs, developing cooperative learning and communication skills, promoting multicultural education. In fact, technology can be used to enhance cooperative learning in small groups, when all students have their task in developing multimedia project. In addition, technology helps to improve communication skills in small groups through integration of telecommunications and videoconferences in the curriculum. The use of Internet provides strong communication link between a teacher and a student. Taking the above mentioned facts into consideration, it is necessary to conclude that technology helps teachers in their teaching practices, allows them to have more time to assess and control students’ performance. In addition, the use of technology in the classroom helps to improve teachers’ productivity.
¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† In conclusion, it is necessary to say that the use of technology in education improves not only students’ achievements, but also teachers’ productivity and professional practice. E-books can be effectively used in the classroom because this technology can be viewed as a teaching tool to improve instruction and achieve greater learning. The use of this technology in the classroom meets the established standards (ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers).
