Cell phones can become an effective tool of cyberbullyng in school. According to Tami Jo Roskamp (2009), cyberbullying is focused on the use of information and different communication technologies to support hostile behavior of an individual or a group of individuals, and this deliberate and repeated behavior is intended to harm other people (p.12). The major findings of the study show that cyberbullying incidents often occur in public schools during the school year. Moreover, it is found that the most frequent forms of cyberbullying in schools are not only spreading rumors, but also the use of digital interactive devices, including cell phones (Roskamp, 2009, p.8). They include cell phone text messages and cell phone voice messages. In this case, cell phones are used by the bullies to send different unpleasant messages all day long, which can easily disrupt the educational progress of students (both the recipients of these messages and the bullies). Some victims of cyberbullying in school can just block these cell phone users from these applications, but it is clear that they need time and concentration of their attention to do it during the lesson (Pendleton, 2011, para.6). As a rule, these illegal actions of students or the so-called cyberbullying incidents are stopped by teachers and principals who organize conferences with the victims and bullies. However, if teachers ignore these incidents, bullies can go unpunished and continue their illegal activities outside the school.
Besides the above mentioned facts, many students of secondary school have also been known to use cell phones for calling in bomb threats. It is clear that if the actual bomb threat takes place, the use of cell phones ďexacerbates the potential for a bomb or bombs to detonateĒĚ (Roskamp, 2009, p.32). ¬†During this time, cell phone networks can be extremely overloaded, making it absolutely impossible for the school teachers and principals to use their own cell phones.
Moreover, many students use their cell phones to take some unflattering photographs of their teachers or other students in order to place them on the Internet. In many cases, they prefer to record their teachers, especially if there is a conflict situation in the class (Bettivia, 2010, p.40). In addition, many cell phones are produced with the Internet access. It gives an opportunity to the students to browse for ďinappropriate content or inappropriate websitesĒĚ (Bettivia, 2010, p.42). Many students prefer to send these inappropriate pictures to other students in the class. They share private photos and do not pay due attention to their studies. The majority of teens do not understand that there are many long-term implications of their inappropriate behavior, and they engage in the behavior without considering the negative consequences. However, it is clear that the consequences for their inappropriate behavior are long-lasting. The presence of these inappropriate photos in the cell phones can have negative impact on the students’ reputations in the future.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to install filters on the students’ cell phones to protect them from inappropriate content (violent and sexual content) which is often used by students in class. According to the statistics, about 90% of students have cell phones (Unger, 2007, p.354). It means that almost each student has access to the Internet and can use inappropriate information during the lesson. Of course, it has negative impact on the academic activity in the classroom. Cell phones distract the majority of students form their classroom assignments.
¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† To sum up, cell phones should not be allowed in school because cell phones create distractions that can disrupt the learning environment in different ways. They can use their phones to send messaged to each other, to bully other students in the class, as well as to take some unpleasant photographs or recordings of teachers. In addition, cell phones can be used by student to cheat on exams and tests. Today there are many models of cell phones which have a variety of functions. That is why cell phones can be used to cheat in a variety of ways (Bettivia, 2010, p.42). Students have an opportunity to text the answers to the questions, use calculator and to photograph the process of examination in order to show other students what they should expect. In addition, they can easily access the Internet in order to find the appropriate answers to the questions of testing. Moreover, students can have access to the entire book or academic article or to their summary on their cell phones during any examination in literature. It means that allowing students to use cell phones in school will create lack of discipline during the lesson and lack of students’ attention during the process of learning. These factors lead to low grades and poor knowledge of students. They can become bad specialists in future because they will have many gaps in their knowledge.
