Traditionally, the gender roles are clearly defined and produce a profound impact on the life and behavior of people. It should be pointed out that the gender roles affect practically all spheres of human life and the distinction between male and female roles may be easily traced in their professional life as well as relationships and behavior within a household. It is not a secret that often people distinguishes men’s work and women’s work that is, to a significant extent, the result of the existing stereotypes and gender roles which are imposed to people from the beginning of their life. And, what is more important, as a rule, the difference between men’s and women’s work is determined by the biased attitude to women and their place in society and family.

Obviously, in the modern society such a distinction between men’s and women’s work is not correct and, in fact, it is really discriminating since such an approach to work make the position of men and women initially unequal. What is meant here is the fact that the biased view on men’s and women’s work leads to discrimination of women at their workplace and in their families since they are initially turned to be in a disadvantageous position because of their women’s work’.

In order to better understand the extent to which such distinction may be discriminatory, it is necessary to dwell upon the essence of men’s and women’s work’. First of all, it should be said that the notion of men’s and women’s work may be applied to the professional career of men and women and to the relationships within the family.

Speaking about the professional career of men and women, it is necessary to underline that many jobs are considered to be either typical to men or women that means that when a man is doing a women’s work’ or a woman does a men’s work’ such situation is often considered to be quite unusual.

In this respect, it should be said that such an attitude to work, which is considerably affected by gender roles and gender-related biases, may lead to really serious problems and the discrimination of women. Among the problem resulting from the distinction between men’s and women’s work may be named the problem of glass ceiling since nowadays the to position in business, politics, judicial power, and other spheres of life are traditionally defined as purely men’s work. As a result, women are practically deprived to enter the highest level of social hierarchy and have little access to the top jobs. Or else, it is traditionally believed that jobs, which were associated with the use of physical labor where the physical strength was very important, are men’s work as well as those jobs where the leadership qualities are needed. In such a way, men’s work is traditionally defined as work that meets the general view on men and that needs leadership qualities, physical strength, logic, and analytical abilities.

In stark contrast, the traditional view on women’s work implies jobs that do not need high educational level, leadership qualities, strength and other qualities typical to men’s work, while, instead women’s work is traditionally defined as the work that is simple and easy to do and, which, as a rule, is inferior in relation to men’s work, i.e. women are supposed to be controlled by men who occupy the leading managerial positions while women are forced to do elementary or low qualified job.

Naturally, one may argue that, in actuality, women are widely employed as highly qualified professionals but such cases are rather exceptional and do not meet the traditional view on men’s and women’s work. In fact, men’s and women’s work result in discrimination of women because men occupies top positions in practically all organizations, commercial, public, state, etc. Moreover, the existing of such notions as men’s and women’s work makes the attitude to women extremely biased since they are believed unable to effectively do men’s work, while the cases when men do women’s work are just viewed as an unusual situation but the problem is that men have larger access to well-paid and top jobs, while women lack the access to them.

Unfortunately, such a biased approach to work is often expended to households. To put it more precisely, it is believed the men should do only such work that needs some physical efforts or strategic planning of the household, while women are traditionally expected to fulfill the functions of a housewife, i.e. to do shopping, cleaning, etc.

Thus, in conclusion, it should be said that the existence of men’s and women’s work is primarily determined by stereotypes and gender roles existing on society. Obviously, such a distinction is discriminatory since it deprives women of a possibility to take the position to men both at their workplace and at home. This is why it is necessary to be really careful with the definition of such concepts and, what is more, it is necessary to change the existing stereotypes and gradually reject such notions as men’s and women’s wok since the world is rapidly changing and women can be really equal to men and perform their job as well as men do or sometimes even better.
