Officer selection process is very complicated, which plays an important part in the development of the effective organizational performance. In this regard, public organizations and agencies are particularly concerned with the selection process because the selection of professionals is very important for their adequate and reliable work. In actuality, the selection process involves a number of issues, both ethical and legal, which affect consistently the process of recruitment and defines, to a significant extent, the overall performance of agencies at all levels, from the local one to the federal and the higher the level is the more responsible the selection process is. Today, the selection process of officers should be conducted carefully and in accordance to existing norms and standards. At this point, it is possible to refer to the selection process of a police officer at the local level.

First of all, it is important to place emphasis on the fact that the selection process of a police officer at the local level involves several stages, which are crucial. At the same time, applicants to the position of a police officer should come prepared to the work in police because this position implies the work with the public and high level of responsibilities of professionals working in the police. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that the first stage in the selection process of a police officer is filling-in the application form. In fact, the application form is the first stage in the selection of the best and most appropriate applicants among all the candidates. At the same time, applicants should be capable to fill in the application form properly that gives insight toward their ability to serve in police. In addition, the application form provides the basic information about the applicant and applicants should provide the concise information, which may be of the utmost importance for the selection of a police officer. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that the application form allows applicants to carry on their selection process and get a chance to take the position of a police officer. In fact, applicants should have good reputation, they should not have any violations of existing legal norms and rules, and they should be reliable and proficient in the field of law enforcement. Moreover, applicants should reveal any relevant information concerning their past, marital status, and so on.

The next stage in the selection process of a police officer is the police written exam, which is an essential stage in the course of the selection process. The police written exam includes eight major categories, including reading comprehension, basic mathematics, vocabulary, report writing, directional orientation, spelling, grammar, and communication. In actuality, all eight categories are of the utmost importance for the proper selection of a police officer. In fact, the position of a police officer is a responsible position that means that applicants should pass all the eight categories of the written exam text. At the same time, the written exam reveals the educational level of applicants and their capability to work in the police. It proves beyond a doubt that a police officer should be proficient in the eight categories applicants pass in the course of the exam. Otherwise, they will be unable to perform their professional functions properly. In addition, the work of police officers implies the work with different people and they cannot work effectively, if they have poor capabilities in either category in the written exam.

Furthermore, the next stage in the selection process of a police officer is the fitness assessment. In fact, this stage is also extremely important because police officers should be in an excellent physical shape because they should be able to afford all the physical activities, which they normally face in the course of their work. In this regard, police officers often have to use physical force and have stamina to afford all hardships and physical pressure of their service in the police. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that a police officer should develop three main fitness categories, including strength and endurance of applicants, aerobic capacity, and anaerobic power. These categories are crucial for stamina and proper physical capabilities of police officers. Therefore, these three categories are used in the course of the selection process of a police officer.

Finally, the last stage is the oral board interview, which is normally administered by current or retired police officers.

This is the last stage in the course of which applicants get consent and become police officers, if they pass the interview successfully. This stage accomplishes the selection process of a police officer.

Thus, taking into account all above mentioned, it is possible to place emphasis on the fact that the selection of a police officer is a responsible process and applicants should pass through the aforementioned stages of the selection process to become police officers.
