The Training Model The Role of Managers in Employees’ Career Development

The major responsibilities of the manager who wants to assist the employees in their career development

The managers usually have several responsibilities concerning the career development of the employees which include the following ones:
Ӣ analysis of the organizational needs;
Ӣ identification of some specific training requirement which are important for the current business plan;
Ӣ development of the training plans not only for the employees but also for other managers;
Ӣ evaluation of the impact of training efforts of the employees in order to improve the results of the training process.(Justin, 2010, para.3)

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
Career development programs are very important for the successful promotion of the employees. According to the research which was carried out by the Institute for Corporate Productivity in 2007, about 60% of 400 companies which were included in the survey successfully implemented career development programs. The senior vice president of the research Jay Jamrog states that “the most common type of development programs are mentoring and coaching”. He also stated that “people do not rely on trainers. They rely on one another, tapping into each others experience”. (Career Development Programs)

The benefits of career development programs include the following ones:
Ӣ the career development programs increase the level of job satisfaction of the employees what is very important for effectiveness and productivity of business goals;
Ӣ the career development programs provide equal opportunity employment and help employees to manage their time;
”¢ the career development programs improve the quality of the employees’ work and to improve the whole work of the organization;
”¢ the career development programs help to increase the employees’ skills and to enlarge their knowledge. (Justin, 2010, para.5)

THE MAJOR ISSUES THAT IMPACT EMPLOYEE TRAINING

It is known that high quality training helps to ensure the development of the employees. However, the employee training is not always done in a proper way. There are certain issues that can impact employee training both positively and negatively.

The employee’s training can impact employee’s morale both positively and negatively:

Ӣ Training of employees can create a team atmosphere as the teaching of employees is done in a group. They learn to work together and to solve common problems. Team work can help the employees to develop confidence and proactive attitude. This is a positive impact. On the other hand team work can create many conflicts in the group.
”¢ The employees can increase their job satisfaction during the process of training. In future, the employers can notice that their employees work better and more efficiently. This future issue provides valuing employees by the employers. The employer who is satisfied with the new skills of his employee can say: “We value you”. This is a positive impact.(Brandenberg, 2010, para.2)

Those employees who are over-trained can make a decision to take their new skills and experience to another company. The reason of this action can be concluded in the absence of available position. The employee does not want to work on a lower position if he can perform the duties of a higher position, and he leaves this company. This is a negative impact. (Brandenberg, 2010, para.3)

Among the other issues which can impact employee training both negatively and positively are interpersonal relations in the organization.

It is known that good relations between the employees and managers play an important role in the productivity and efficiency of the work.

However, bad relations which are based on discrimination in the workplace can negatively effect the employee’s training. Such documents as the Civil Rights Act(Title VII), the Americans with Disability Act, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act prohibit work discrimination in the USA. It can be related to gender and racial discrimination. For example, if a female employee has got some new skills and experiences which she will be able to use in the process of work, some male employee may change his relation to her. It is known that some male employees show their negative attitude to the female employees especially if she is going to take higher position in the workplace.

This is a negative impact.(Cohn, 2000, p.166)

In case the atmosphere in the workplace is positive, the employees have good interpersonal relations, the impact of this issue on the employee training will be positive. (Stoetzer, 2010, p.4)

The other issues which can be the obstacles in the process of effective training include the following ones:
Ӣ the language problem. It is known that the business language is English, and it can be a barrier for some employees.
”¢ The organization does not have enough budget for the employee’s training.
Ӣ The employee is not interested in training and in developing himself. He does not apply all his efforts to achieve good results.
Ӣ The trainers are not ready to transfer their knowledge to the employees. The quality of education is rather low. The employees have no any opportunity to have a good practice as they did not understand some points during training. (Nagi, 2010, para.5)

The issues discussed show that a lot of work should be done by the managers and the employees in order to achieve good results in training.
