A research paper, as with any good essay, starts off with an introduction. The introduction serves two purposes: it presents your thesis and gets the reader's attention. There are five ways you can do this: • statement (usually the thesis) • anecdote (a brief story) • statistics • question • quotation Select the method that suits your audience, purpose, and tone, as you have learned. STATEMENT USED AS AN INTRODUCTIONStatement To Edith Newbold Jones, cross-currents with English influences came early.
