As a matter of fact, I would like to start with the quote of an outstanding philosopher and physicist Albert Einstein, who once said: “I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university”. The quote probably illustrates the idea that everyone regardless his or her social origin, status, gender, nationality or belief should be invariably treated with respect. Dictionaries define respect as a feeling of appreciative, often deferential regard or willingness to show consideration or appreciation. Respect is the foundation of any society that values the unity and diversity of people and attempts to be free from prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping. Obviously, human life is sacred and individuals should treat each other with mutual respect, fairness and sensitivity, so that a person maintains his or her inherent dignity and self-respect.
Reducing and combating prejudice and discrimination is definitely a complicated task that should be adopted and applied considering the environment and the community. All people should take it seriously and make it a personal goal for everyone to reduce the negative tendencies in the society. One should realize that he or she is able to change something in close cooperation in supportive groups united with a common goal and infatuated with the idea of unity and diversity. Mutual commitments will result in mutual prejudice and discrimination reduction. What can certainly be of great help is education. Becoming familiar with other cultures and discussing different stereotypes and prejudice one removes the fears and debunks stereotypes. Direct contact and interaction with people from other cultures and backgrounds may also assist and develop polite, empathetic and respectful attitude towards each other.
Summing it up, we need to have a strong sense of security and develop empathy to be able to learn, critically think and accept other people. We should always remember that variety is the spice of life and diversity is the reality of nature. Everyone seems to agree with that but observing present-day situation we still see inequality, prejudice, restricted rights even in developed countries. We should try not to come under the influence of stereotyped mass media and develop critical thinking, learn about people and cultures as much as possible.
