Term paper on Electricity waste

The electricity waste is not only a mere economic problem of the University but also the social problem because, if the University raises costs of tuition, the University also raises barriers on the way of students to education as many of them cannot afford high tuition costs. Therefore, the electricity waste leads to the high cost of tuition, while the high cost of tuition makes the higher education unavailable for many students. This means that the electricity waste provokes the social problem of raising barriers on the way of individuals to higher education.

The experience of leading Universities introducing energy-efficient technologies, such as the Clemson University or the Ohio University, reveals the fact that the University can reduce 20% of greenhouse gas emissions through the reduction of the energy consumption. Therefore, the University that does not introduce energy-efficient technologies and tends to the energy waste may waste up to 20% of electricity (Williams, 2008). The reduction of electricity waste can lead to considerable economic and environmental benefits.

In actuality, there are diverse measures that can be introduced to save electricity and to reduce the energy consumption. First, the University should encourage the change of the attitude of students to energy consumption (Lewis, 195). The reasonable use of electricity while working on a PC can help to reduce the electricity waste. For instance, students can switch off their PCs to avoid idling, which still leads to the consumption of electricity.

In addition, it is possible to suggest introducing new equipment, which is energy efficient. For instance, the replacement of desktops by laptops can lead to the substantial drop of the electricity waste and electricity consumption. The use of LED monitors and other energy-efficient devices can lead to the decrease of the electricity-consumption. In such a way, the University can encourage a considerable reduction of the electricity loss in campus due to the introduction of energy-efficient equipment that needs a smaller amount of electricity.

The reconstruction of buildings can help to reduce the electricity consumption and prevent the electricity waste. For instance, large windows can help to reduce the consumption of electricity because of good natural lightening of the inferior of buildings in the campus (Kassman, 140). The use of large windows allows saving costs not only on lightening but also saving costs on heating. Large windows can help to decrease the consumption of electricity in campus.

In addition, new building materials can help save energy consumption due to the higher thermal saving characteristic of new materials. This means that the campus will not need as much electricity and energy to heat facilities in the winter. The use of energy efficient materials contributes to the efficient use of energy and the reconstruction of campus facilities can bring considerable financial and environmental benefits in a long-run perspective.

Furthermore, the University can introduce elements of energy-efficient technologies and focus on the use of renewable sources of energy (McCormick, 1995). For instance, the use of geothermal heat pump system can reduce the consumption of electricity for heating the campus facilities in winter. At the same time, the geothermal heat pump system can reduce the consumption of electricity because the system can be used for cooling in summer. The geothermal heat pump system consumes considerably smaller amount of electricity compared to conventional systems of heating as well as cooling.
