Critical Reflection Essay

Historically, women were in an inferior position compared to men. The inequality between men and women manifested itself in different ways. In this regard, the inequality between men and women could be traced in the social life, economy, politics and other fields, where women were oppressed by men. The development of the society contributed to the change of gender roles and the change of the position of women in the society. In actuality, the inequality between men and women persists. In this regard, it is possible to refer to the current situation in Canada, where women still suffer from the worse economic position compared to men. The economic inequality between men and women is particularly obvious in regard to the amount of unpaid hours women work in Canada compared to men and in the job opportunities of women compared to men.

In actuality, the current situation in Canada reveals the fact that women are in a disadvantageous position compared to men. In this regard, it is possible to refer to the current situation in regard to the unpaid work of women.

Basically, the problem of unpaid work exists in Canada in regard to all employees. At the same time, the position of women is worse compared to men because they have to do more unpaid work compared to men. For instance, women often need to perform unpaid work, especially when they are involved in care giving. In this regard, women with children are in a particular difficult position. They have to perform their job and combine their professional work with care giving for their children. Therefore, they are more vulnerable to the risk of having more hours of unpaid work compared to men.

At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that the position of women is worse compared to men because of existing traditions, social norms and standards. What is meant here is the fact that men traditionally focus on their professional work, whereas women are often forced to spend more time on the maintenance of their household and care giving for children. In such a situation, women naturally spend more time with their children. Therefore, they need to do more unpaid job compared to men, who are employed in the full-time job as women do but men get payment for their work, whereas women have to do care giving work, which is unpaid and they get no payment for their work. In this regard, men are in an advantageous position compared to women.

At the same time, it is important to place emphasis on the fact that, in such a situation, women have worse job opportunities compared to men. In fact, men can focus on their job, whereas women have to share their work with their household work. In this regard, it is worth mentioning the fact that many women have to do the part-time job instead of the full time job after the birth of a child. In such a situation, they do not have ample opportunities for their career development and what is more important they do not have the possibility for the career development being employed in a part-time job. Obviously, the lack of job opportunities deteriorates the position of women in Canadian society and increases the amount of unpaid work they have to do.

Furthermore, the economic position of women depends on the level of wages. In this regard, it is worth mentioning the fact that women often receive lower wages compared to men. The lower level of wages of women means the worse economic position of women and they do not have the opportunity to earn more than men. At this point, it is important to place emphasis on the fact that men and women perform the same job and their qualification may be the same nut they receive different wages. In this regard, the lower wage for the same job is apparently discriminatory. In such a situation, the economic inequality between men and women becomes obvious.

Finally, it should be said that the economic inequality of men and women prevents women from gaining equal position in Canadian society. The position of women is inferior compared to men, whereas the economic inequality maintains gaps between men and women. In such a way, the elimination of economic inequality should be one of the primary concerns of policy makers because it increases the social tension and deprives women of equal opportunities compared to men.

Thus, taking into account all above mentioned, it is important to place emphasis on the fact that the economic inequality between men and women persists. At the same time, the economic inequality increases gaps between men and women and put women in the inferior position compared to men. At this point, the elimination of inequality is of the utmost importance because it prevents the injustice in Canadian society and discrimination based on the gender inequality, which, in its turn, is provoked by the economic inequality.
