Sex and Gender in the Society

Traditionally, gender relations in the society were determined by gender roles which were imposed on individuals by social norms, rules and stereotypes. The present epoch is not an exception in this regard. At the same time, it should be said that the view of the society and, therefore, social norms and stereotypes, related to gender and sex were not always just. In fact, even today, it is possible to trace the elements of the gender discrimination and gender roles which put representatives of different genders into dominant and subordinated position, while the concept of homosexuality is underdeveloped in the modern society and often leads to the exclusion of individual who cannot identify their gender in accordance to the existing social norms. At the same time, people still attempt to go beyond conventional norms. In this respect, it is possible to refer to the emergence of sex clubs which actually challenged the social morale and existing norms.

In fact, the emergence of sex clubs was a response of the part of the society which insisted on the liberty of sexual relation from biases and stereotypes imposed on people. The creation of sex clubs evoked a strong opposition from the part of a majority of the population because it contradicted to conventional principles and moral norms. At the same time, arguments against the sex clubs went beyond a purely ethical or moral domain. In this respect, it is worth mentioning the fact that sex clubs are viewed by some specialists (Blotcher) as a potential threat which can provoke the spread of HIV AIDS. In response to the public opposition to the emergence of the sex clubs, the authorities enforced the public sex policies that actually led to the closure of many sex clubs.

At this point, it is important to lay emphasis on the fact that the authorities attempted to defend the existing social norms and rules, which were traditionally against any manifestations of the public sex. What is meant here is the fact that the society traditionally viewed sex and intimate relationships as a very private domain, which could not be exposed to the public as well as it could not be interfered in by the public. In other words, sex and intimate relationships were traditionally a very private domain and the society traditionally opposed to the public manifestation of sex and intimate relationships. Obviously, the authorities keep maintaining these attitude to the public sex and the decision to close sex clubs was motivated by the pressure of social norms and rejection of the public sex.

On the other hand, the fact that the sex clubs emerged reveals the strife of people for liberalization of sexual relations which grow to be more and more public. However, at the moment, the society oppresses any attempts to develop the concept of public sex as socially acceptable.

Thus, taking into account all above mentioned, it is possible to conclude that gender relationships still remain very complicated and the society develops gender ”“related stereotypes which determine the behavior of an individual, while individuals who do not meet these stereotypes are doomed to failure in their social life and exclusion. In such a situation, sex is a subject to existing biases and stereotypes, which are not always just. In this respect, the closure of sex clubs is the manifestation of the social pressure on the liberty of sexual relations and gender roles of individuals.

Questions:

What could be the effects of the non-interference of the public and authorities in the development of the sex clubs?

Whether sex clubs are products of the modern culture uniquely, or it is a common trend to different civilizations?
