Stodden Article Essay

Stodden, D.F. et al. (2008). “A developmental perspective on the role of motor skills competence in physical activity: An emergent relationship.” Quest, 60, p.290-306.

In the article “A developmental perspective on the role of motor skills competence in physical activity: An emergent relationship”, Stodden and other researchers focus their attention the revelation of interdependence between the development of motor skills and physical activity. Moreover, the researchers attempt to extrapolate the interdependence between motor skills and physical activity on the problem of obesity epidemic. They study subjects, which include children, adolescents and adults, and attempt to reveal any existing interdependencies between motor skills and physical activity and their possible positive impact on the prevention of obesity. Eventually, they conclude that motor skills can stimulate the engagement of people in physical activity and the childhood experience is important in this regard.

Basically, the authors point out that the problem of the interdependence between motor skills and physical activity is under-researched.

They refer to other researchers which prove that this interdependence is under-researched, but they attempt to close this gap and focus their attention on this interdependence.

At the same time, they develop a model in which they attempt to reveal how motor skills and physical activity can positively influence obesity. On the one hand, they support the idea that motor skills and physical activities can reduce the risk of obesity. However, on the other hand, they admit that there are numerous environmental factors which minimize the positive effect of physical activity and provoke obesity.

Finally, the researchers point out that motor skills can encourage physical activity. As a result, they believe that through the development of motor skills it is possible to increase physical activity of people and, therefore, decrease the risk of obesity.

Thus, the article is very important in terms of understanding of possible ways of the change of the contemporary culture and lifestyle to minimize health problems of people, such as obesity, through development of motor skills and physical activity.
