Term paper on What is the meaning of life

What is the meaning of life? This is the question which  is interesting for all of us and a lot of people were  thinking about this question in all times. Many philosophers  were asking this question and trying to answer, so were doing  their students. However, wordings were not concrete in varied teachings. Years were running like a river and a huge amount of different theories appeared. Each generation has some special opinion and purpose to reach, thought that somewhere exists right formula of correct life living.

As was said nowadays exists a lot of different theories and I want to tell about the most popular and well- known.

In the nineteenth century was strong motion called utilitarianism. The representatives of this motion confirmed that the meaning of life is to be happy. All things, which give you maximum happiness, lead you to find this sense and reach the final destination.

Nihilists appeared later. They denied the possibility of existence some high knowledge or truth about the sense of life. However, they confirmed that nothing in world matters. But they did not take into account that their own principle could be used to themselves.

Consequently, nihilism does not matter anything too.

A good example is Friedrich Nietzsche who was nihilist only a part. He tried to find sense in something bigger, what about he told in his books and works. He raised this theme on  a new level in the world.

In the end of the nineteenth century was the strong influence  of the pragmatism. According to it the sense of life could   be found only with help the experience. There is any theoretical truth about the meaning of life. The truth could only be created, realized or proved, but not discussed.

In the beginning of the twentieth century appeared  another one motion – it was called existentialism. It sermonized that every human carries responsibility and creates the sense of his own life. Everybody fills his life with his own sense and meaning. There is no high sense, human is free to choose and in the same time responsible for his choice. The freedom suggests responsibility. The man is the sense in the  Universe, the man creates the sense himself. But the existentialists go deeper. They say that the existence precedes essence. This phrase is very deep and hard to understand.

The human’s life reflects his will, but both of them are meaningless.

Then appeared the humanists. For them the sense of life is to  serve to the mankind, because the happiness of one man depends  on the mankind in all. There is necessity to take care after all human race, look for good for everyone and provide the survival.

After humanists appeared clever and logical positivists. The  positivist could ask you, what is the meaning of question  about the sense of life.

Being expressed in the language the question about the sense of life has no sense. Not the life  has no sense, but meaningless is the question about its meaning. So, there is no sense to look for an answer on the meaningless question.

Before we were looking  throw some theories, which had some attitude to our question. They differs a lot from each other and there is nothing similar or general in them.

On the next page we will see what science could tell us  about the sense of life, something new and unknown for us.

Science does not think up anything, it just looks what happens around. Or tries to do this. Science says that the big amount of people does not interested in the question of the meaning of life. They just live their lives eating and multiplying. The sense of life is in issue genes in next generations. It means that the sense of life is not even in  the survival, but in the continuation of life.

The human has two main instincts. The instinct of survival and the instinct of multiply. The scientists confirm that the instinct of multiply is much stronger then the instinct of survival. The sense is not to stay alive, but continue life.
