What should the U.S. do about its dependency on imported oil

As a matter of fact, currently U.S. is heavily depends on imported oil. Moreover, taking into account recent high prices on crude oil and number of vehicles in the U.S. ”“ we can see threat of energy security and, as a consequence, of the U.S. National Security. As a result, arises the question: What should the U.S. do about its dependency on imported oil?
Of course, there are a number of effective measures, which can help to reduce U.S. dependency on imported oil. Recently, current U.S. President Barack Obama declared new strategy for U.S. energy security. It should be noted that this strategy includes the work on several directions, among which are: development of own oil fields; reducing U.S. dependence on oil; usage of cleaner alternative fuels; more efficient energy usage, according to How Much Oil Does The US Really Have? (2010).
I would like to consider each if these measures more closely. To begin with, it can be said that development of own oil fields considers launch of canned oil fields on the U.S. territory in Texas and Alaska. Moreover, these steps also include the development of subsea oil fields and its production in Mexican Gulf and nearby Alaska. The next step, reducing U.S. dependence on oil considers primarily the replacement of oil to cheaper natural gas, encouraging industry to use new machines and aggregates, which are less energy-consuming, measures for more rational use of energy especially at the federal level. In turn, usage of cleaner alternative fuels allows strengthen the development and implementation of a new generation of hybrid and eco-friendly automobile engines. It also includes considerable investment in further development of biofuels as an efficient replacement of gasoline. The last element of energy program includes more efficient energy usage. This step provides for progressive development and introduction of new, relevant standards of energy consumption in the country. Also, encouragement of the usage of alternative and renewable energy sources on federal level, according to Martin Feldstein (2010).
It is essential to note that another extremely promising alternative to oil is the updated biofuel. Also, promising option among alternative energy sources implementation can be ethanol, with production expected to increase fivefold to 36 billion gallons a year by 2020. Ethanol will be primarily produced from wood chips and agricultural waste. Therefore, the U.S. invests heavily in developing the next generation of biofuels. Another important way to reduce dependence on oil, the U.S. president called the move to environmentally friendly modes of transport. As a fact, the U.S. administration will propose new fuel efficiency standards for cars and trucks. Early 2010, the U.S. has provided $ 187 million to support nine innovative projects to develop fuel-saving technologies for trucks and passenger cars. The Obama administration is confident that in future the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere by the end of 2030 will decrease by 20%, according to Ivan Eland (2009).
To sum it up I would like to say that today the U.S. heavily depends on imported oil. Recently, Barack Obama declared new strategy for U.S. energy security. This strategy includes the work on several directions, among which are: development of own oil fields; reducing U.S. dependence on oil; usage of cleaner alternative fuels; more efficient energy usage. Moreover, the U.S. President determined that these measures should allow the country not only reduce oil dependency, but also reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere by the end of 2030 by 20%.
